Beneath it lies a lake that used to be a town, and the people still living above the water are hardly reassuring. The original Phantasmat gives its stranded traveler two closely related problems: finding a way out and discovering what happened to the place.

The name on the door establishes the mood before the investigation starts. Big Fish's description emphasizes the submerged community and the hotel's unusual residents, which gives the setting a strong vertical relationship: the building where you seek shelter overlooks the history it seems unable to escape. There is an immediate reason to be curious about both the inhabitants and the landscape.

An especially useful feature is the ability to switch from searching for hidden objects to a match-three board. Dora's JayIsGames review explains that completing the board's objectives removes items from the search list. It is more flexible than deciding at the start that one type of puzzle will carry the whole adventure. A player can use visual searching where it is enjoyable and change activities when a stubborn object stalls progress.

The same review praises the integration of story and exploration, and regards the inventory uses as generally sensible. Its reservations include travel between locations and some repeated object choices. That combination is worth considering: an engaging setting can make revisiting places rewarding, but slow movement still affects the experience. The critic also anticipated the main revelation while remaining interested in how the story reached it.

That last point is a useful way to approach this particular mystery. Guessing what might be wrong with the hotel does not necessarily answer what happened to its people. The premise has room for curiosity about motives and history even after a player develops a theory. Revealing the solution here would remove much of the reason to investigate the flooded town at all.
