9 Clues: The Ward review: a murder investigation behind hospital doors

Big Fish player rating

★ 4.6/5 · 57 customer reviews

The Ward begins with a call for help and a death the visiting detectives cannot ignore. Doctor Crow falls from a window at a psychiatric hospital on an isolated island. Staff and patients know more than they will say. The setting gives the investigation a boundary: the answers are nearby, but the people holding them are not cooperating.

Big Fish poses the case through names and physical clues, including a girl's name carved into a wall. Steam adds the hospital's earlier fire and places the story in 1950s America. That establishes the mystery without revealing its solution. It also makes clear that this is an asylum thriller, a setting some readers will find too familiar or uncomfortable regardless of the puzzles.

Detective Mode returns, with crime-scene clues arranged to reconstruct events. Steam advertises 42 locations and 19 mini-games. The appeal is the alternation between searching a room and deciding what the evidence means. It is a stronger pitch for someone who wants a case to organize than someone who wants nothing but hidden-object lists.

Read past the recommendation button

The customer evidence is mixed in a useful way. One Steam reviewer recommends the game for functioning puzzles while strongly disliking its story and lead character. Another prefers it to the first 9 Clues. A positive recommendation button can conceal substantial criticism. Read the words under the rating if narrative matters to you; an overall label will not explain which part a player tolerated and which part they enjoyed.

Our reservation concerns the premise more than a missing feature. A psychiatric hospital used as a place of menace is a familiar horror shortcut. The descriptions establish that framing, but they do not demonstrate a thoughtful account of mental illness. Choose the game for a fictional investigation if that setting works for you, rather than expecting insight into care or treatment. An effective thriller location need not be a credible portrait of a hospital.

For a 9 Clues player, the investigation mechanic is the clearest reason to continue. For a newcomer, the first game's coastal town may be a gentler test of the format. The Ward is listed as 9 Clues 2 on Steam, so the naming should not lead to a duplicate purchase.
